With a sellout crowd of over 320 people, the 8th SIDS Annual Bull & Oyster Roast which was held on Saturday, October 13th was a huge success!! The Level Fire Hall in Havre de Grace MD was the place to be as the event raised a phenomenal $9,000 in support of the Center’s Empty Arms Project! The guests packed the room to listen to the live music of Son’s of Pirates, who commented that this was the best bull roast they had every played at. The committee will be approaching the band to play at next year’s event as well. Folks were lined up early to come to this local event that has raised more than $48,000 over the past 7 years for the Center. Committee members as well as local volunteers, worked many months to plan a special evening for all. It was obvious that their hard work paid off from the sell out crowd who attended. Guests enjoyed a variety of great food including beef, turkey, and ham grilled to perfection, fresh oysters and oyster stew,salads, cold beverages and of course mouthwatering homemade ice cream donated by Cold Stone Creamery.
Special thanks to our Master of Ceremonies this year, Richard Brooks who also served as the live auctioneer. The enthusiasm helped to generate many bidding wars on silent and live auction items. The auctions alone raised over $4,000. A lot was happening behind the scenes where a core group of volunteers were working hard. They were truly committed to the rousing success of the event and spent most of the day setting up and preparing food. This event was established in memory of Jonathan Cockerham who died of SIDS in 1996 and to support awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Over the years this event has not only helped to heal many hearts, but has supported bereaved parents through the Empty Arms Project.
Thanks to everyone involved with the 8th Annual SIDS Bull & Oyster Roast. Events such as this are only successful because of the commitment of its committee members and support of the community. Plan to join us next year for the 9th Annual SIDS Bull & Oyster Roast, Saturday October 11, 2008 to be held at the Level Fire Hall, in Havre de Grace Maryland.
